Levaquin is a generic brand for levofloxacin. Levaquin contains the same levofloxacin, a prescription drug used to treat a wide variety of bacteria infections which includes pneumonia, skin infections, chronic prostate gland infection, urinary tract and acute kidney infection and chronic bronchitis.
Levaquin is also prescribed for different usage other than the indication; for treatment or inhibition of other bacterial infections, which includes tuberculosis, salmonella food poisoning, shigella food poisoning, and disseminated mycobacterium avium complex disease; it is also taken by people with weak immune system from HIV or other conditions.
Levaquin belongs to the class of anti-bacterial agents known as fluoroquinolones. It acts by preventing the activity of certain enzymes required by bacteria to replicate, transcribe, repair and recombine DNA; thus killing the bacteria.
Levaquin is manufactured by Janssen pharmaceuticals INC, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. Levaquin is available in various dosages; 250mg, 500mg, and 750mg; oral solutions of 25mg/L, one dose injection in flexible containers which contains a solution equal to 250mg, 500mg or 750mg of levofloxacin, one dose injection containing vials containing concentrated levofloxacin solution equal to 500mg or 700mg that needs to be mixed further with other solution. Note that the oral solution should be administered 1 or 2 hours before eating.
Dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type of infection to be treated so therefore, Levaquin should only be taken under the supervision of the doctor. However, elderly people or people suffering from kidney problem should follow an adjusted treatment schedule; children inclusive. Levaquin and alcohol? It is not advisable to drink alcohol while administering Levaquin because Levaquin has some side effects (dizziness or lightheadedness) and these effects get worse with the intake of alcohol.
Common side effects of Levaquin include:
Nausea, headache, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia and constipation, edema (swelling from water build up) and severe itching. Severe side effects of Levaquin is rare and will need medical attention, so it shouldn’t be ignored. They include: joint problems, severe diarrhea from the resistant bacteria, clostridium difficile, variation in blood sugar, sensitivity to sunlight, and damages to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, gastro-intestinal disorder and infections, hallucination, suicidal thoughts and tremor. In addition, children on Levaquin medication may develop musculoskeletal disorder like arthritis and gait abnormalities. People on steroid medication, anti-psychotic drugs, diuretics and heart rate medications should inform the doctor first before administering Levaquin. Also, elderly people or people suffering from neuromuscular disease myasthenia gravis should not take Levaquin as it worsens muscle weakness.
Do not take Levaquin if you have a known allergy to levofloxacin or other medications from the class of quinolones. Do not take Levaquin in high doses; overdose causes tremors, loss of control over bodily movements and convulsions. Go to the nearest hospital in case of an overdose.
