Lamictal is an anti-epileptic medication which belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-convulsants. Lamictal is the brand name of lamotrigine and it is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
Lamictal is administered as a stand-alone medication or in mixtures with other drugs to treat seizures in adults and epilepsy in children. It is also used to treat Lennox-Gastant syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that results in seizures and frequently causes developmental delays in children. Lamictal is generally recommended to adults living with manic depression to interrupt sessions of depression and mania.
Lamictal is not only available as a typical tablet but also come as Lamictal CT or chewable tablets and it also come as an orally disintegrating tablet. The typical Lamictal tablet should not be crushed, chewed or broken, but it should be swallowed as a whole. The chewable Lamictal tablet should be chewed properly or swallow in whole with water.
The chewable tablet can also be dissolved in a tablespoon of water and taken, it should be noted that the dissolved tablet cannot be kept for a later use. Also, the orally disintegrating tablet should not be swallowed whole but should be placed on the tongue to dissolve and drink water thereafter. However, the type and dose of Lamictal depends on the age of the patient.
For children, as young as 2 years, the immediate release Lamictal form is administered in combination with other seizure medications. For patient below 16 years, it is administered as an adjunct medication, that is, it should not be used alone. However, Lamictal XR, the extended-release form is recommended to patients from 13years of age. Moreover, it is expedient that Lamictal is taken exactly as the doctor prescribes and a blood test is occasionally necessary to be sure a patient is taking the right dose and amount. Common side effects of Lamictal include; nausea, dizziness, headache, sore throat, back pain, trouble sleeping, variation in menstrual period, stomach upset, and feeling tired. A doctor should be called upon if these severe side effects occur; dark urine, yellow patches on the skin, fever and a persistent sore throat, increased seizures, severe nausea and vomiting, worsening depression and suicidal thoughts, irregular breathing, and chest pain.
In case of overdose, seek medical attention urgently or the poison help line should be called. Overdose symptoms include fainting, increased seizures and loss of coordination. Warning; never take Lamictal with valproate, the combination causes severe rashes that result in hospitalization.
Never stop the drug suddenly, this can cause an increase in seizures; speak with your doctor before stopping the medication. Do not take Lamictal if you have a history of depression or mental illness as it creates thoughts of suicide. Also, before administering Lamictal, your doctor should know if you have a history of kidney or liver problem and if there are seizures medications that you are allergic to.
