Lipitor is the brand name of atorvastatin, a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called statin. Lipitor is prescribed to lower cholesterol levels and triglycerides in the blood. However, Lipitor raises the level of the good cholesterol that is HDL cholesterol in the blood. Sometimes, Lipitor is administered to patients with a heart problem to lower the risk of experiencing a heart attack or other cardiac problems. Lipitor and diabetes: additionally, Lipitor is prescribed as an inhibitive drug for people with type 2 diabetes. Pfizer manufactures Lipitor and was approved by FDA in 1996.
Lipitor comes in 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg doses. The dosage ranges of Lipitor is 10mg to 80mg once daily. Lipitor can be taken as a single dose in the morning or evening, with or without eating. Depending on a patient medical history and condition, Lipitor can be administered 40mg per day. The drug should be discontinued and a doctor called immediately if these severe side effects occurs: sudden muscle pain; tenderness or weakness, swelling, weight gain, fever, nausea and loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dry skin, dark colored urine, itching, increased thirst and urination.
Lipitor medication also has mild side effects which includes muscle pain, diarrhea and mild nausea. Emergency medical help should be sought immediately allergic reactions to Lipitor occurs: hives, trouble breathing, and swelling on the tongue or throat.
Do not drink alcohol while on Lipitor medication; alcohol speeds up triglyceride levels and improves risk of liver damage. Inform your doctor about any prescription drugs, OTC drugs, recreational drugs, herbal remedies before starting Lipitor medication. Medicines that contains niacin, steroids, cancer medicines, antifungal medicines, oral contraceptives, diltiazem should not be taken in combination with Lipitor; they interact with Lipitor.
Avoid eating food that have high contents of fat or cholesterol so Lipitor can be active in reducing your cholesterol levels. It is advised that patients should stick to an exercise plan so their weight can be kept in touch. Patients and children with liver problems should not take Lipitor. Rarely, Lipitor medication causes a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscles and this leads to kidney failure. Call a doctor immediately if you have a fever or dark colored urine.
